This is my round-up of easy to use FREE software available online.
Whether you need to create curved text or simply turn a design into an SVG file, below are some useful FREE software to help make your life easier. Some of these even has an app for use on your tablet!
Create free Monograms
Mark & Graham is a online site that allows you to create beautiful monograms and after you’ve created your final version, you can have the file emailed to you. Your finished monogram will usually be available to you as a .PDF or .JPEG file. You can use Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) or a free photo editor (like Inkscape, see below) to open these files and apply them for personal use. Please note – this website does NOT allow you to use the monograms commercially – meaning items created with these monograms cannot legally be sold by you.
*A note about downloading, installing & using fonts: There are many websites that offer free fonts. Not all are safe and can be trusted – I try to link only to fonts that can be safely downloaded, however I accept no responsibility for malware etc as I have no affiliation with these sites.
Create images for social media
Canva is well known and has been a go-to for many entrepreneurs with no design skills. It is a great resource, with easy to use templates.
While not all of Canva’s features are free (you can buy stock images etc), it is very well designed software. PLUS it has an App for tablets! You will need to create an account to use Canva.
Create Vector graphics
Inkscape is a fantastic free software used by professionals and amateurs alike. Perfect for creating SVG files and also allows for exporting to PNG, OpenDocument Drawing, DXF, sk1, PDF, EPS, PostScript and more.
Some helpful tips for creating your word art:
- If you just want the words, without shape background, next to the Colors and Animations tab, make the Shape transparency zero. If you want the shape as well, turn the transparency up.
- Colors and Animations – Tick the box next to Transparent, to ensure your image will save without a white background, else you may have trouble to Trace it.
- To make one name stand out and be bigger than the rest, add the name to the list of words and set it’s size to be 2 and do not tick the Repeat box. Keep all other words at size 1 (see example below).
Convert your own photos to SVG with Stencilgram
This software is truly easy to use! Download directly to SVG when you are done, or if you just click Download Image, you will get a PNG file.
